Quality Contributions Report for February 2025

This is the Quality Contributions Roundup. It showcases interesting and well-written comments and posts from the period covered. If you want to get an idea of what this community is about or how we want you to participate, look no further (except the rules maybe--those might be important too).

As a reminder, you can nominate Quality Contributions by hitting the report button and selecting the "Actually A Quality Contribution!" option. Additionally, links to all of the roundups can be found in the wiki of /r/theThread which can be found here. For a list of other great community content, see here.

These are mostly chronologically ordered, but I have in some cases tried to cluster comments by topic so if there is something you are looking for (or trying to avoid), this might be helpful.

I wonder if @campfire would be interested in doing a breakdown of the destiny lawsuit drama similar to the Daniel Green - Naomi King scandal. Another youtuber pxie (https://substack.com/home/post/p-155256128) has brought a lawsuit (https://www.givesendgo.com/suedestiny) against youtuber Destiny (https://youtube.com/watch?v=c5Jwhx3ZggE) over sharing explicit videos to a third party without consent.

I guarantee the kiwis have the whole thing recorded and analyzed in grotesque detail, although maybe not quite what you'd call fair and unbiased.

Ha, don’t really have the interest. I typically avoid learning about such scandals so they all sounds like he-said she-saids to me. The Daniel Greene situation was different because he’s a more niche e-celeb in a hobby of mine (reading/writing epic fantasy) and I was in the minority who saw through the accusations even as all his friends and collaborators condemned him. Was definitely not expecting my first Quality Contribution to be about Youtube Drama when I made this account, will post about more important issues on the future. But glad some of you were entertained and thanks to whoever nominated me.

I was hoping it was for the Nazi joke, but thank you nonetheless, guys!

Glad people enjoyed my movie review post. I'm curious if anyone else has seen the movie and agreed or disagreed with my review. Most of the discourse I've seen is on what the movie means for Hollywood and not on if Ne Zha 2 is actually a good movie or not.

It's a good movie! As an animation nerd I was blown away, there is some extremely technically demanding and difficult stuff in it and the craftmanship was so obvious even people who went in trying to hate it were shocked. Not all the humor works, some of the melodrama went on for too long, they could've cut 15-20 minutes.

My overwhelming impression is that western 3D animation movies need more fighting and cool stuff in them if they want to compete. I really liked the Wild Robot, I thought it was an incredibly sweet and uplifting story. But Nezha 2 had two characters fighting with their weapons stuck together while simultaneously juggling a spear between them.

Cosmology impenetrable, chinese bureaucracy is so powerful even the fantasy is rife with it.

Two AAQC, entirely localized to the shortest month of the year? I'm chuffed.

I particularly enjoyed the Xianxia, very deserved AAQC!

Pease feel free to do more in the future!

Thank you! It's a wild world out there, browse by top of all time in /r/MartialMemes and you'll get a fair inkling.

@jeroboam (Not at'ing you, bro. Just want to give props for a good comment.)

In 1913, the federal budget was only about 2-3% of GDP. It was funded almost entirely by tariffs.

Today, the federal budget is about 25% of GDP, funded mostly by taxes of individuals.

I missed this comment the first time 'round, and it's a great reminder of the scale of things. I'd like to add another observation. 75% of that current spending is the big entitlements (SS,Medicare,Health,Income Security) and interest on the debt, all things that were adopted post-WWI, which explains the lion's share of what is now a completely different beast of a federal government. If you killed everything other than current defense spending, you're still at 3.5% of GDP. This beast is not something that you can trim around the edges, maybe find some fraud or waste here and there, maybe fire a few bureaucrats, and call it a day. It's something completely different. It's not even about the government actively doing stuff for the most part. For the most part, it's just taking your money, putting it under some shells, mixing it around (sneaking a little out the back for the host), and giving it back to either you or other people who they prefer.
