This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I'm seeing a lot of rumblings in Catholic circles about the drag performance aping The Last Supper. A lot of "there's one religion in particular where they never would have engaged in this mockery."
Also for extra Culture War points they included a child.
Well sure, they don’t want to die. Meanwhile, what are the Catholics gonna do?
Discreetly hire organised crime to break some legs. That'd do it.
Do what? The message won't resonate if you don't take credit. People are afraid to badmouth Islam not just because you might get visited by people who might let it slip that they were hired by the Muslims as they break your legs. People are afraid to badmouth Islam because a very obvious jihadist might cut your head off and nothing will be done to curb the ideological programming young men like him get in their communities.
I don't think that's true. If high profile theater kids engaging in what's very stale (God has been dead for quite some time) but nevertheless tasteless public blasphemy met freak accidents, were found suffocated inside carrier bags or hanging alive head down in the woods with zero attribution, other nihilistic theater kids would take notice.
I don't even hate these performances because they're blasphemous, they're extremely cringe. If people want to be weird sex freaks, I don't want to see that in public or know about it.

There's also the obvious jihadi advantage that they're willing to die. So some rando can pick up a knife and stab people at a farmer's market or subway. This requires much less overhead or structure.
Organized crime would prefer to make money without being labeled as a terroristic enterprise and getting the full force of the government turned on it, no matter how much you offer. Rational people just aren't as scary.

When they go after people leaving skid marks on rainbow crossings, is it because LGBT activists are so violent?
That’s the ingroup. Islamists aren’t in-group for Western elites, they’re just scared.
The reaction of a large chunk of Western elites to Gaza can't be explained just by being scared.
Which reaction are you talking about? Most seem to be trying to thread the needle between various political factions.
There's a large chunk of the elites that are sympathetic to Gaza and oppose Israel, in ways that can't be explained by just being afraid.
Those people aren't really elites. They quite literally are just kids on college campuses, and we can tell this because they're routinely getting in trouble- slaps on the wrist but still trouble- for it.
I assume "elites" here refers to journalists, democratic party workers etc.

No; they're the ones organizing those literal kids on college campuses.
