Guilty Pleasures

Do you have guilty pleasures, you can share?

@Stefferi post on Eurovision exposed one of mine. My first exposure to Eurovision was in 2003 while living in Germany. The Turkish entry won that year.

That there are often scantily clad ladies performing helps elevate the show above many Idol and xfactor style contests. Also distracts from some of the more bizarre or political songs.

The Ukraine won in 2004.

Greece in 2005

Finland broke the sexy lady winning streak in 2006. Though not for lack of competition from FYROM and The Ukraine

Lol same. Watched Turkey won as a kid. And then every single year ever since. I feel like it keeps getting shittier and more formulaic every year but maybe I am just grumpy. Also jury voting sucks ass. Who cares about the opinions of some third-rate music "journalists" from Albania? Give me some juicy politics and neighbor voting.

Musty stuffed animals with soft ears to rub (M, early 30s)

-- A lot of my workout playlist is just songs that make me laugh, largely joke songs like Orgy for One, but I will slow down a set of kettlebell snatches so I can howl at the appropriate moment in Shakira's She Wolf.

-- I love diet coke. On a road trip I love to stop at a Wawa early on and get a huge Cherry-Vanilla diet coke and sip it through a straw the rest of the drive.

-- I went through a period of intense fandom for the reality TV show The Bachelor. I used to throw a weekly watch party for my wife's friends, and pretty quickly got into the gamesmanship of the show, I read How to Win The Bachelor, listened to multiple podcasts weekly during the season, and followed the competition intensely.

-- I love being complimented, and will think about a compliment I receive for some time, despite it being deeply unbecoming to do so.

Re Cherry Vanilla Diet Coke. Freestyle machines have orange vanilla coke zero, it's quite good. Also sonic does peach and vanilla, it's excellent.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
