This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Sloot’s view on these girls and the state of western womanhood is, as far as I can tell, the same as (the dreaded) Jim’s, which is to say near identical to the Mirpuris in question.
This isn't true in all cases though, what's funny is that many of these girls who did get raped also got abortions, something Jim calls unlikely. I do read him, he's right about certain things but at the same time, this entire issue stems from mirpuris doing it. Natives of ones own society, a healthy one would have enough shame and not drive it like a rented car.
Women who are being raped don't actually like it. Jim has a good understanding of women but it's not the best model, you'd find better resources by actual pickup artists or that pdf from manhood 101.

Again, leaping from "you have views on western womanhood which I find medieval and repellent" to "you'd totally shove broken glass up a young girl's vagina, wouldn't you, admit it" seems excessively uncharitable.
@2rafa's comment was perhaps unnecessarily snide, but she's not wrong. Have you ever read Dread Jim? His only problem with Muslim rape gangs is that they're Muslim.
This is also why I called @KulakRevolt's entire schtick performative. Here he is pretending to be outraged at Muslim rape gangs, while on Twitter he fairly explicitly argues that we should be raping the women who belong to our enemies.
"Who, whom?" isn't just a leftist hypocrisy.
I read an article once or twice, I think. For @KulakRevolt, I can't say, I don't use twitter. I still remember when he advocated the slaughter of teachers for oppressing children by making them sit in a classroom, so I don't take him very seriously, though he is absolutely right about the bovine, docile-to-the-point-of-sabotage response from British elites. I hope those responsible someday get what they deserve, and I think that what they deserve is pretty close to what @KulakRevolt thinks they deserve.
But @Sloot is not @KulakRevolt; while he may have a poor opinion of western women, I've never seen him advocate for rape and torture, and I felt @2rafa's comment crossed a line. I could have reported it but it seemed more honourable to reply in person, which I did.
I agree the comment was snide, but it was based on many years of commenting history and interaction, so wasn’t really a drive-by.
