My neighbor's youngest, older than my oldest but close, started public pre-K this month as a boy and came back this week a girl. The mother of the family seems to think the school knows best

I have nothing meaningful to add. This is just so insane to me, it is hard to believe we ended up here and normal functional people are just accepting this

His videos were fine when they were twenty minutes long, but as they grew to one or two hours I lost interest. They just became obsessive recountings of every change to the record over time. “But then, in June 2017, a Canadian runner named MisterPoop69 did the impossible and had this run…” which proceeds to shave maybe half a second off the record and will subsequently be beaten one week later.

In his obsession to accurately detail every change to the record he neglects to tell any kind of story at all and he buries the interesting parts in two hours of meaningless microimprovements.

He is more or less unwatchable to me these days

You’re overthinking this quote. Here is all that really matters:

  1. At the time Kimmel said it, it was overwhelmingly clear that the shooter was not a conservative
  2. The left was absolutely running wild with blatant misinformation all over social media cynically lying that the shooter was a Groyper
  3. By saying that the MAGA gang was “desperate” in their attempts, and that this was a “new low” to suggest he was “anything other than one of them” it is obvious he was positioning himself with the people mentioned in point 2. Why would it be a new low to suggest the shooter was anything other than MAGA unless he was in fact MAGA

Combine this with Jimmy Kimmel’s known history of outrageous bias and the (correct) interpretation is obvious. You could probably show 1000 people that Kimmel quote and ask them if Kimmel thinks the shooter is MAGA and you will get essentially 100% (minus lizardman constant) saying yes.

Still, the Kimmel episode was aired on the 15th, when none of these chat quotes were public (afaik).

The bullet inscriptions were published by reputable sources on the 12th. Then on Sep 13 it was being widely reported he was romantically involved with his transgender roommate.

By the 15th (Kimmel’s show) it was overwhelmingly obvious this guy was not conservative. It was purely 100% dishonest by Kimmel.

Yes, I recall a good deal of sympathizing even here, of all places. I wonder if Kirk’s assassination has caused many of those people to reconsider. Or is it just another case of “no bad methods only bad targets”?

I don’t want people to be fired for comments on social media, but I see the open celebration of murder as really socially corrosive and incredibly disturbing. In my view something must be done about it. Ideally social media like Reddit would simply treat it with the same aggressive censorship they reserve for anti-trans comments. But if social media can’t or won’t do something about it I will accept cancellation as it’s better than letting this go unchecked. There is almost nothing in my mind more important than combatting the bloodthirst we saw this week.

I’m am just about 85% finished with A True History of the Conquest of New Spain. A fantastic first hand account by one of Cortez’ men, a book I was shocked I’d never heard of. I can give a bit of a review in a day or two when finished if anyone is interested, but for now I’ll just say I recommend it highly. Even in translation from 1850 it is extremely easy to read, fast paced and exciting.

I had also always put him in the same bucket as Crowder and Shapiro, one of these generic “own the libs/facts don’t care about your feelings” debate bro types. Strangely after his death I discovered my wife had frequently watched him on TikTok and thought very highly of his intelligence and eloquence.

The acts themselves are not particularly concerning, but the reaction is. None of the acts you listed engendered widespread open celebration by normal people.

You’re being egregiously rude for reasons that are unclear to me. Perhaps you are hurt because your entirely speculative theory was not well received. You still have avoided all the myriad criticisms repeated by numerous comments and have just retreated deeper and deeper into sneering sarcasm

I haven't hung around here much for years, but every reply I'm getting is like... multiple standard deviations below my expectations

You’re the one claiming he had no discernible political motivations despite inscribing multiple antifascist slogans on his bullets and his family describing his fervent devotion to politics. You’re also the idiot claiming that a sniper would have packed up and left without taking a shot if he just avoided making any trans-related statement. Frankly these are just idiotic comments

I play a lot of HoI4 and have never heard of this song. Considering another of his messages was explicitly antifascist what do you think is the logical association here? This sophistry needs to stop. His family has stated his political leanings. This is not a mystery anymore

The level of dishonesty I’m seeing about his motives is making feel truly insane. I don’t even think most the people saying he was a Groyper could even possibly believe it themselves. There is a degree of cynicism and joyful deceit that I’m finding hard to comprehend. I have come to believe in the true evil of our enemies.

Do you want more vigilante killings?

They are openly saying yes, they love vigilante assassinations. Your colleagues are stating explicitly that they support murders and you are perhaps too emotionally invested in the uprightness of your tribe that you’re unwilling to take them seriously.

The argument I’m seeing from the left that he was actually a Groyper and all the antifascist slogans were ironic has an amusing resemblance to Holocaust denial. By this I mean the old “It didn’t happen but if it did happen it would’ve been a good thing.” As in, “He wasn’t killed by a leftist but we leftists think killing him is a good thing.” Which is what makes it seem so absurd, if your ideology leads you to support his assassination, is it really so surprising someone sharing your ideology did it?

Why are we overthinking this? He wrote multiple explicitly antifascist slogans on the bullets. In every case of someone writing on bullets/guns that I know of, be it Tarrant or Mangione it has been an earnest (if meme-filled) expression of their beliefs.

I much prefer the types of Fuentes or, better yet, Sam "Hitler's Top Guy" Hyde to those disingenuous establishment figures

These guys are even less sincere. Just because you’re fringe doesn’t magically make you more earnest. These guys are just performing characters even less convincingly

If any male I knew got any cosmetic surgery I would think much less of him. Doing such a thing is just unseemly and womanly.

I’m assuming you must be very young and single?

What is the point of a tattoo that is not intended to appeal to others? Do you intend to sit and stare at your own thigh?

You’re assiduously dodging the same objection multiple people have brought up to you.

No. In the analogy car ownership=gun ownership. Some bad actors will ill use cars, some will ill use guns. It is exactly analogous as I stated it. Should I be accepting of the possibility I will be killed by a drunk driver if I support car ownership? Yes, I suppose. But virtually no one would say my death is deserved, laughable or worthy of mockery because of it.

Car=gun. Drunk driver=insane assassin.

Most everyone supports the right to own and drive cars despite the accepted cost of traffic deaths and drunk drivers. If I was killed by a drunk driver would the fair response be “Well, he supported car ownership so his death is deserved”?

None of that changes the sheer giddiness and overt schadenfreude of the anonymous leftist redditor or tiktok'er

Yes. Browsing Reddit today has been eye opening, if not entirely surprising. The open glee upvoted across every subreddit is only really comparable to the Mangione murder. At this point it hardly matters to me who actually did the shooting

For all these problems, whether it is homelessness or criminality like assaults and whatnot, there are two types of solutions. One is an immediate solution that simply puts a stop to the undesirable behavior, potentially by throwing the perpetrator in prison. The second attempts to address root causes that lead people to engaging in these behaviors in the first place. In my ideal world we would pursue both, as one does not exclude the other. But if my only 2 choices are "throw them in prison forever" or "build free mental health clinics and maybe they will choose to use them, maybe this will fix them and maybe in 10-20 years the problem will go away" I'm going with prison forever every time. The "prison forever" solution is guaranteed to make the problem (such as it is from my perspective) go away forever. If there is a homeless guy in the park there is really no chance of prison failing, in the sense that it is guaranteed to solve the problem I care about, that being that there is a homeless guy in the park I want to use. The other solution might work at some indeterminate point in the future. If there is a homeless guy in a park that I want to use there is only way to fix my problem tomorrow

  1. I have no reason to believe this. It may or may not be true but at this point it is not convincing me.
  2. Any sufficiently large-scale action is going to have a few mistakes, there will always be false positives. If we insisted on zero false positives the only solution would be to deport no one (or something approaching zero). Similar to how cops enforcing the law will periodically result in an innocent person being shot. It is unfortunate, and we should work to minimize mistakes but to some extent mistakes are a sign of things actually being done as opposed to total inaction. If we insist on 30 appeals for every person we will simply never be able to match the incoming rate of illegal immigrants.
