Low effort top level post. This is against the rules. I strongly doubt that you don't know this. 1 day ban.
I don't really like to watch videos.
Given that you are posting this story, and they are protesting a pride parade I just figured they were thinly veiled neo Nazis. Probably not very sympathetic to a jury.
Don't do this as a top level post. Low effort posts like this crowd out effort posts.
All weak cultures that have barely survived the dominance and ascendancy of US culture. They have barely survived by keeping out all foreign borns, and then just copying the parts of our culture that they can. I don't want to emulate such weak cultures.
See my girl scouts comment.
I think there is a reason the "anti-immigration is racist" argument has lived on for so long. Ultimately it feels like no metric is ever good enough to convince anyone when there are just too many brown people by their approximation.
I went to George Mason, I've lived in the area for over a decade. My parents grew up in Northern Virginia (but neither stayed there). I grew up in a slightly rural area of Virginia. I only really know the English language. Aside from the area not being as white as where I grew up it still feels very American to me. I've been to India and multiple countries in Europe, so I know what a foreign country feels like. There is a discomfort in not knowing the language, in missing so many of the basic cultural understandings of everyone around you, and of not having the grounding feeling of knowing people around you. Its a feeling, I acknowledge you can feel differently about things. But if we are just gonna go on vibes, then I'm telling you where my vibe is at.
So its not just "your" backyard. Its at best "our" backyard. Though I don't claim any form of ownership over the area despite having lived here and had parents that have grown up here. That is one of my ongoing frustration with anti-immigration viewpoints and woke viewpoints. You don't solely own the common spaces. You don't own the right to determine who and what is acceptable there. So much of what they said is kind of status jockeying to be like "well I am the ultimate american, so i should get more say in how the common spaces look" or "i am the ultimate oppressed victim, so i should get more say in how the common spaces look".
American culture always dies and is reborn with each new generation. That is part of why it is great. It doesn't have to stay the same century after century like other stale cultures. Opera and Ballet is dead, but singing and dancing aren't. When I hear "american culture is dead" its like hearing that "no one listens to music" or "no one makes music anymore". A specific time period of American culture might no longer be in active production, but expecting or requiring that feels very old world and anti-american to me.
I find the doomsaying equally absurd. If american culture isn't dominant and ascendant then what the hell am I watching, listening to, and reading all the time? As an American I usually have to go inconveniently out of my way just to consume foreign art.
I truly and honestly have no idea what you are talking about.
Go live in a treehouse in the woods and own all the land around you. Why should you get to dictate who is in public spaces? Strangers are a necessary part of civilization. People with foreign cultures, beliefs, and genes are a natural consequence of an expansive market that can provide nearly anything.
You've been asked to not do this in the most clear way possible.
Not any other critics of modding have been asked to stop. Just you, and just these kinds of dumb comments.
I am tempted to take your advice and give you a permaban:
Letting obvious trolling go on this long is a bad look, but the mods are such easy marks for it.
After all these sorts of comments you make are obvious trolling.
Community sentiment is generally against perma-bans these days. 30-days for you
This is the third top level comment in a row on the same topic. Not everyone wants to discuss this topic, it is generally a courtesy to keep a single topic of discussion to a single top level thread. If a current news event topic is way too large (like the Ukraine war, or the Israel-gaza war) then we will try and create a separate thread dedicated just to that topic.
@iprayiam3 and @Frequent_Anybody2984 please try and follow this courtesy for others users.
User has received 7 day temp ban for this post. Personal attacks aren't acceptable.
Edit: My bad, I misread this post. User has been unbanned.
The LLM disagrees with me as well, and for basically the same reasons: it's been trained to think that.
Yes, yes, we're all brainwashed
"Being English has nothing to do with ethnicity", yes I would say that is the perspective of someone who has been brainwashed.
Don't call people brainwashed. The user you responded to baited you, and you took the bait. And worse, you trained them that the snarky response is what gets you to actually make an effort and respond.
Effort responses for effort posts. Mod reports for low effort snark.
Those problems exist without immigration. They are in fact active policy choices on the part of cities and universities respectively.
In general I think people should have the right to work and live anywhere they want. I don't believe voting, receiving government welfare, being a citizen etc is a right. So that is my conception of open borders. I don't really think of open borders as open citizenship for anyone or open welfare.
Sometimes government can really pile on the messes. They've certainly done similar things with medical care in the United States.
If they caused all the messes in the first place, should we really gonna trust them to fix the latest one?
I should read usernames more often. I responded to this before reading the username. Leaving it up, but user is perma banned. Do not create usernames like "bigdickpepe1488". They violate our discussion terms. The "bigdickpepe" is poor taste. But the "1488" thing as nazi thing is not ok. I've copied the whole original item because it was creating some good discussion, and this way it will be preserved if they delete their account. Nothing about their actual participation was bad, so I'm fine with them coming back under a different username.
I messed up, didn't realize users can change their display name, so a ban is not necessary. Please change the display name.
I ain't gotta "acknowledge" anything. And y'all ain't my family. Most Americans are immigrants and descendants of immigrants. And that was true 63 years ago as well.
If there is to be a cutoff point I select the civil war. Not because I want to say people coming afterwards are unwelcome, but because people coming afterwards shouldn't think of themselves as the "founding stock". If America is to be a blood and soil nation it is not for the whites it is for the English, their descendants, the descendants of the Dutch in New York, and the descendants of the enslaved.
Count Canada too and central America is basically a rounding error.
I have been to India. Some of it looked better than Northern Virginia. At least the area I was working in when I was there.
Much of it was worse. But that's why I said middle class immigrants are great.
My daughter is in public school, less than half the kids in her class are white. She is also in girl scouts. It's about 1/3 each of White, Indian, and Hispanic. In both cases it's been fine. In the case of girl scouts I can't imagine a more American organization for little girls to join.
There are enclaves out there where people don't assimilate. Usually it's in New York in the neighborhood of Little [country name].
And here's mine: it would look much like the weekly thread on /r/blockedandreported, only better because the quality of commentators here is higher.
Or it would eventually look exactly like that thread or worse, because:
- The higher quality of commentators would leave
- Everyone would put in less effort.
- And we don't have a popular podcast that draws in a stream of new and active users.
Dude, this whole discussion started because a "rather well-written" effort post received a warning. You are definitely setting the bar too high.
A well-written thing that is not a discussion is still not a discussion. The bar is not high. In this case they went and climbed at a neighboring gym and put in a bunch of effort, but the bar we were monitoring which is much easier to reach was left empty.
Some questions are inherently antagonistic.
Antagonistic, one day ban.
The case of AA is actually one of the reasons why I would advise people to not go looking for racial spoils. It doesn't help in the long-term because people re-adjust their expectations (as you have done). The personal narratives involved in receiving that kind of help also seem very toxic to self-achievement. AA is a case where social enforcement of race based beliefs has lead to race based information being more salient, which is one of the caveats I talked about above. The more we make race matter, the more it will matter. The less we make it matter, the less it will matter. And as I said you are not in traffic, you are traffic. Same applies to society.
For understanding the overall world, and its history, it is quite possible that race and genetics are helpful pieces of additional information. I didn't want to commit to race never being useful information. I just don't think most people are engaged in sweeping attempts to understand history.
To use your example of running into a young male in a hoody at night, yes you should be significantly more concerned if he was black, the stats don't lie. Certainly you should avoid being in that situation in the first place, but feel no shame about crossing the street well in advance.
The stats in many ways do lie. Put someone in poverty. Add violence to their upbringing. Have them be young and male. You have a recipe for ciminality. Many of the people in this position in certain countries happen to be black. It is not them being black that is causing them to be criminal. Being able to identify a white person that was raised in these circumstances is purely advantageous.
The clothes and the context are still doing most of the work for you. Change the clothes to a business suit, and be in a nice area of town. Suddenly you being worried about being mugged by the black business man is an absurd level of paranoia and fear on your part.
Then we need to sell off all the parks. And I don't need to tell you who does most of the farming.
The mods all talk. Netstack ask us to come by and check this. And noticeably Netstack only said not to do it. Which is basically the minimum level of "mod action" that we can take. It is impossible to be softer.
I don't think as many people would be apprehensive about it if every time this came up there wasn't a cadre of posters making it sound like we have super strict requirements for top level posts.
Doing it after we have warned you not to do it isn't treated very well, but same with most rules.

I just posted about the antagonism in the top level post. Other people being antagonistic, is not an excuse for you to be antagonistic. You get a warning. Next person who responds to the top level trying to start something is eating a ban.
