If you're using it for real-world tasks (and not to score points / complain about your outgroup) it's logical mistakes are far more annoying than its political leanings.
I had three different HVAC repair men come to look at my furnace and all three gave me completely different diagnoses with very similar prices (~$1300). My aunt has a list of repair men that she has collected over her life (mostly recommended by friends I think) and is adamant that word-of-mouth recommendations are the only feasible way to get a good contractor.
Do you think more than 0.1% of white people will be killed during a riot in at least one of the 1000 largest US cities in the next 10 years?
Of the 43 killed in Detroit (the city with the most deaths that summer), 33 were black. It seems pretty misleading to characterize the "Long, hot summer of 1967" as a pogrom against cis white men.
Do you think there are going to be violent riots with the aim of massacring or expelling cis white men in the United States? What percentage of cis white men do you expect to be killed or expelled?
They're ready to start pogroms now.
Are you using a definition that isn't
an organized massacre of a particular ethnic group
?
Mean reversion probably will happen but Trump feels like a 90-95% win probability if we held elections now.
Seems like you answered your own question? But the betting sites aren't betting on who would win if the election was today and the correlation between polls and election results decreases the farther out the election is.
(Also it always bears pointing out that PredictIt charges 10% of your profits which seriously hampers the accuracy of its predictions).

Me too
Imo he clearly meant “nothing personal” to mean nothing personal against Lee. It’s the ideology/Confederacy that he represents (and/or is claimed to represent) that attracts progressive’s ire.
Whether Stalin was an honorable gentleman isn’t too relevant when discussing his statues.
This statue of Stalin was smashed and recycled by the Soviet Union during destalinization. They also blew up this one in Prague.
We can be the place where high effort discussion happens or we can be the place where we talk about how we deserve blowjobs. I've never seen an Internet community capable of accommodating both.
Some serious stones and glass houses imo. By those standards 99% of the Internet is dumber than “midwit”.
Can we just say “they don’t seem to know much about Wikipedia’s finances”?
The optimal amount of crime-avoidant advice-giving is non-zero.
The optimal amount of crime-avoidant advice-giving right after the recipient was just raped is zero.
I've seen more and more complaining about the far-left on reddit, and more people upvoting/saying things like "X sucks for men", etc. on places like /r/neoliberal and /r/AskReddit . I think this has been increasing since around 2020.
I agree there has been an uptick recently (e.g. the top post on /r/neoliberal is complaining about a professor labeling students as colonizer or colonized) and the second highest post on /r/AskReddit is "What are some examples of body shaming towards men that go unnoticed?"), but society-wide vibes change over months and years, not days.
Jesus telling you to love your neighbor and saying rich men won’t enter heaven isn’t at all similar to Marxism?
If the distribution of lifespans was normal (or, at least, symmetric) this might be believable, but since it’s not I have to ask: why does increased variation have to keep expected value the same?
For example if I move some people from the 50th percentile to the 60th and an equal number to the 40th, that’s going to change the expected value.
There’s no particular reason to expect symmetrical variability in the underlying factors causing life expectancy to lead to no expected value change in life expectancy — E[f(X + Gaussian noise)] isn’t E[f(X) + Gaussian noise].
There is a tremendous amount of luck required for a (non-celebrity) writer to write a best-selling book.
Boebert giving an inexpert handjob during the showing of Beetlejuice
Are you trying to spin touching the crotch of a man's pants as a handjob? Or do you have a source that shows something else?
I think you replied to the wrong comment
I’ve heard this claimed before but admit to knowing nothing about it. What is the evidence for it?
Completely true. I’m not saying Twitter is trying to (or even can) cultivate a garden if ideological diversity, which was (roughly) the goal of /r/slatestarcodex
Twitter is probably more interested in maximizing users (which, as you say, isn’t the same as diverse viewpoints), but a similar principle still holds: if you want to maximize the number of people using your services, a policy of allowing entry to all often isn’t optimal (as users here often point out for public transportation).
There are plenty of people who aren’t interested in a place that tolerates anti-semitism. Somebody on /r/TheMotte or /r/slatestarcodex once made the interesting point that maximizing speech is completely different from refusing to censor anything — at a certain point you’re driving out as many viewpoints as you’re enabling by tolerating certain people.
Also advertisers – advertisers care.
Is there a reason you chose to make a low effort comment rather than hit the "report" button?
A top-level post was "DAE think my out-group actually only cares about money". This is a clear violation of the hot take rule. I did not report the comment because I (correctly) did not expect mods to enforce this rule.
I don't want shady thinking to be banned. I want the people taking controversial positions to do something to justify it. My bar is low -- one or two past actions that make little sense if the ADL wants to reduce anti-Semitism, for example.
(For what it's worth I did a higher effort critique of the last comment)
IMO the right lens here is that American waiters have the valuable "capital" of living in America -- where there are high-earning consumers willing to pay for their labor.
In contrast, there's nothing more valuable about unionized workers compared to non-unionized workers (except their ability to rent seek).
I just had a horrible “everyone loses” vision of the future where everyone is permitted to conceal carry and kill criminals but they’re required to wear body cameras while in public.
