very good advice. I would amplify the the part about being a Patron.

In NYC, art and improv comedy are scenes that might be a good fit for OP - many opportunities to build a network of relationships, to improve social skills, to get to know a wide variety of people, and to strategically deploy cash in many ways that will be fun for the Patron and for everyone else involved.

i like this paper (Computer Science: Not about Computers, Not Science) https://www2.lawrence.edu/fast/krebsbak/Research/Publications/pdf/fecs15.pdf

i went to highschool in the USA in the 90s: there were mutiple parties every weekend at various houses of kids whos parents were out of town, when the weather was good we'd sometimes have huge keg parties just out of town in a sort of nature area. something like the moon tower party in dazed and confused. not infrequently, people would get a hotel room to hang out in. pretty typical to go to multiple stops on a friday or saturday night.

even i, described once by a friend of my girlfriend as being a "cool nerd", knew multiple people who could get me weed, beer or liquor. friends of a friend would rarely show up with cocaine or acid, and i knew of older people using heroin but never saw any.

this type of partying was by far the main highschool social scene, i would guess 40% of kids were part of this including most of the athletes and popular types.

looking back, it seems like a major factor was parents constantly going out of town and leaving the kids in charge of nice single family homes, kind of surprising how much that was happening

yes this is what i think, she is trying to pre-filter her output in real time out of concern that it would be offputting to various segments of the public

she probably does very well among her typical crowd, the struggle looks like trying to avoid saying things that would trigger the wider public.

unphased

ha you're right, bit of an ironic blunder there

i think people who learn it by osmosis through reading often think it means something like unphased, and now enough have used it that way that it's officially a definition. i think i'm fine with it, not a linguistic prescriptionist

you might have the meaning of nonplussed backward - if so its a common mistake no biggie just wanted to mention in the spirit of being helpful

edit: oh no apparently now the dictionary says that in "north america" it can informally mean its opposite now. i guess i'm too late.

a solution that occurs to me would be for him to just start saying "i'm speaking now" early and often as an interruption and also talking over any interruption she makes. after he's said it 10-20 times go back to business as usual. (and if she starts saying it, talk over her and say it at the same time)

sorry you're right.

clicking on your link, i get: This video contains content from UMG, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds (i'm in the usa)

not really a question but i was reading this article about thorns on plants: https://cosmosmagazine.com/nature/plants/thorns-prickles-roses-plants/ they just couldn't make it through without including: “We also respectfully acknowledge that some of the species studied here are available to us only through many centuries of Indigenous stewardship and non-Western cultivation histories,” says Saterlee. like so what

this is from a bit over a year ago, kind of a weird thing where she went and bought some records. to me this comes across badly because why are you buying these basic albums only now?

"there ain't nobody smart, I know, I checked"

yep, this is true. powerful people do keep "smart" people as pets but their smart people aren't that.

when i was growing up i had this fantasy that i'd pass all the tests and be whisked away a la ender wiggins, but the reality is that a super high G person is just a freak, like a six fingered man. Doing important things in the real world has to be done in a way that manages risk and politics, it's a team sport and just needs people who are smart enough and have all the other right characteristics.

I'm now a typical corposcum executive and no one accuses me of being smart but they sometimes notice that i get a lot of lucky breaks.
