Trump to revoke legal status for 240,000 Ukrainians as US steps up deportations

Apparently underway before the White House blowup with Zelensky, These people are in the US as parolees essentially, so removing this legal status would allow them to be deported quickly.

Other big story is Afghans who worked with US troops may have their legal status stripped.

Rafi, a former Afghan intelligence officer who asked to be identified only by his first name to protect family members still in Afghanistan, entered the U.S. legally in January 2024 using the CBP One mobile app at the U.S.-Mexico border. He was given a temporary humanitarian parole status that allowed him to live and work in the United States for two years.

“As a result of his active efforts against the enemy, he is currently in extreme danger, and in need of assistance in departing the country,” the former CIA officer who trained him wrote.

The officer described Rafi as “truly one of the most dedicated and hardworking individuals I had the honor to serve with in Afghanistan.”

If the US invades your country and you fight alongside the invaders, the least you could be rewarded with is protection.

Every poll I've seen also shows Americans overwhelmingly support hosting Ukrainian refugees. If thousands of Ukrainians are deported to Ukraine, especially if fighting is still ongoing or resumes in the near future (more likely than not given Russia's stated territorial ambitions), I wonder if this event will be remembered in the same way turning Jewish arrivals by boat prior and during WW2 is remembered.

I'm also curious if this is a tactic to inflate deportation numbers. There is no way they hit their goal of deporting millions of illegals who have been in the country for decades, so you focus on people like this who are easier to track down and deport (and ironically, genuine refugees). The number of deported people is a lot higher after two years, but you haven't actually made a dent in the illegal population.

I know this place is quite reactionary and conservative, but is there anyone who actually still believes that the US should be a safe haven for at least some amount of people escaping war and violence, especially if those people are disproportionately women and children like the Ukrainians?

Here in case he decides to delete a top level comment again.

By the power invested in me by the ghost of George Washington that came to me in a dream last night, I proclaim you an American for one (1) day. Enjoy the complimentary American flag cake and bald eagle. Don't forget to leave all civic divisiveness at the door.

I feel it is important to note that, just two month ago, the media decided that Kamala had all the momentum and Iowa was in play. They will certainly try to blame Republicans, they may very well succeed, but events might not play ball.

Not SlowBoy, but I'm pretty sure he was saying Trump was less willing to spend on Ukraine specifically, not government spending in total. He is, of course, free to correct me.

What really irked me was that he ended his two month hiatus early just to post that.

Oof, I read through Kuang's Poppy War trilogy and had no desire to read more of her. The first half of the first book is Kung Fu Harry Potter, then it shifts hard into Chinese nationalist fever dream, complete with a few chapters dedicated to the rape of not-Nanking so you don't feel as bad when the main character commits genocide on the not-Japanese. Then she spends two books ping ponging between ruthless sociopathy and helplessness as the plot demands. People called the details of the setting (food, clothing, etc) really well researched, but then the author described the not-Mongols as using huge longbows on horseback and that kinda brought everything into question for me.

And even when it did it treated him with deadly seriousness right up until the second he died, unlike rest of the cast, the flesh lumps in waistcoats. Regardless, fantastic movie!

Ideally, sure. I don't think he was asking for ideals. What would actually happen? What do you believe would actually happen to Israeli Jews if Israel no longer existed?

@HlynkaCG, I believe you have been summoned.

My initial thought was, "Aren't Serbia's sworn enemies pretty much all of the Balkans?" Then I checked a NATO map and saw an ocean of blue, except for Serbia and Kosovo.

Fucking hell. You reminded me about Giant Bomb. I drifted away from them around 2019-2020, checked back just now, and recognized absolutely no one on the podcast but Jan. Half of that fucking was the staff's vast knowledge/experience in the industry, and they're just... gone?

You misunderstood the sarcasm. All the money in the world doesn't mean people will listen to your orders. This is leaving aside the conspiratorial claim that Nato is giving marching orders to Ukrainians.

Indeed. The United States government provided so much funding for the Afghan national army that they were able to just tell the Afghans to stand and fight. And, by god, isn't that exactly what we saw?

Here is one (yes, twitter, boo hiss etc):

Now, don't get me wrong, an AI stamping out what appears to be the most generic fantasy cover imaginable is a low bar to clear. But if you asked me without context, I would have assumed a human stamped this out instead. I am of the opinion AI will wipe out the mediocrities of art, actual talent will be just fine. Not coincidentally, large swathes of twitter are losing their minds.

I noticed ghoul thrown around a lot on /r/stupidpol towards, well, pretty much any 'neoliberal' boogeyman they don't like, but especially targeted towards the old right wing flavors like Kissinger and Cheney. This is pure anecdote, but I have yet to notice vampire and bloodsucker.
