Stochastic terrorism is bad.
I believe I can safely say this about the past: I, and a few other dorks I know, would have cheered the death of any mayor that closed their town down and was seen eating lobster in a near by town.
So, maybe?
China very plausibly released a virus, intentionally or unintentionally, that devastated most of the world economically if not biologically.
1950's America would haven rightly not stood so silently for this kind of shit - we would have gotten out (several) pounds of flesh; and it would have been worth it.
The pussification of our world can be seen in every single corner of our country. Kids barely even say Trick r Treat anymore, they just kind of vaguely stand there expecting candy that is worse by every qualifying measure compared to 20 years ago.
In a meta sense this is for the best; killing several million more people may not be the best thing to do. Buuuuuut, is it really better that a billion of us live in a complete untruth?
as /u/NewCharlesInCharge states ' A lab in China, most likely with funding from the United States. The geopolitics on lab leak are a wash. ' The issue is we aren't hanging our own at a near fast enough rate, or at all.
It honestly reads like fan fiction.
However, I have met enough absolutely bonkers folk in my life that it also isn't that far fetched of a possibility - but this updates my priors to believing he's a gay hooker / lover, not some wacko Trump supporter.
but I'm also not brave enough to give any specific predictions or confidence numbers
Why? Are people who you've vaguely known online for a decade going to give you shit? I used to post on mma.tv for a solid decade+ and I had almost 100k posts and the absolute insanity I would post while drinking @2am is unparalleled even on places like 4chan. Although I haven't posted there in several years, I am in a discord with about a dozen of us old time posters and we're all at the very least quasi-friends even tho I have only met one of them - the firs ttime being is when he let me stay the night at his house, with his wife and kid, while I was getting my first tattoo. For some, a wild thing to have met for the first time, to us, a gathering of Slavic anti-commie comradery. So I state: make bold predictions and speak your truth!
Bluesky will die and we won't hear a peep out of it aside from 2 top posts in the next 6 months while it's pushed from the vagaries of the elite.
Something new will come, and it's possibly already here, but the centralization of the Internet has me fearing for the long pasture of nothingness. I think we're at a point of samesieness and I await the future with open arms.
First off, fantastic username.
Secondly, hoes are always so mad!
To the Gucci, what I would like to happen in the society I hoped we live in is that some part of the (judicial?) branch of the government starts pressing charges for the cronies sending those sorts of emails to tech companies. I take no particularly issue with the state employee themselves and frankly hope that they get off scott free. But there should be hundreds, if not thousands, of arrests to anyone involved in this sort of low level perversion. I want a purge - a gentle one. As much as I would love to write something along the lines of ' off with their heads! ' and as much as maybe I believe in that sort of thing, I understand I probably wouldn't want to live in the sort of society that beheads its pubes for following orders. Arrest them, release them, arrest the people in charge, release them, and hire someone who understands they aren't looking for ' people who say shit '.
People Who Say Shit should be a protected class.
I have 19 years of retail management experience. A recent BS in Nutrition & Masters in Global Management.
What career opportunities can I find? Preferably outside of retail. Preferably over 72k/year (I make 65k now).
I'm having a horrific time finding something, anything.
I've applied for probably 500+ jobs - and gotten only a few interviews and one job (my current one I've been at for 9 months after 19 years at GNC).
Any thoughts, feelings, ideas, recriminations are welcome.
(Edit: should this have waited for the Wednesday thread?)
Oz is obviously a hack - not in a political sense, but just as a shill and as a person. But I watched the debate after I saw all the memes, and Oz sounded like a fairly normal person. Not just in comparison to a Goomba stroke victim, just in general.
It's obscene thinking Fetterman should be elected. His opening sentence he said goodnight. It wasn't something like Biden getting lost in thought (which in twenty years will come off as a near catastrophe and people won't believe he was President and the only reason will be ' ... He wasn't Trump '), it's that Fetterman is incapable of starting, maintaining, or finishing a thought. Also he can't wear a suit.
Did you miss the part where I'd already had covid by the time the vaccines became available?
Having covid + getting even one PFizer shot seemed for over a year to be the optimal level of safety against hospitalization and death in regards to covid. I don't really understand why this community cannot separate abject facts like the above one with clown statements made my the media and Fauci himself. It's really irrational.
I had covid. I had one Pfizer shot a year later and another like 9 months later (ish - I'm not great on memory). It's fine that you don't and it sucks that you had wacky family relations - but why lie about things in the nature of ' why bother ' when it's very obvious why bother. The ' had covid + one shot ' was practically a meme around here for months.
How does prostitution fit in with the others for you?
But at the same time, it is hard for non-Americans such as myself not to notice how open racial appeals are made by folks like Tucker or Ann Coulter.
I think you're noticing this because for the first time in my lifetime (I'm 38) there appears to be some sort of centralized white mainstream identity happening.
Mainstream racial appeals have been going on my entire life. Mostly from blacks, some, more now, from Hispanics. When white people do it it's called extremist and white nationalist. When some other group does it it's considered normal.
Yes - I know my dad and mom's name even tho it's Polish but my gramma & grampas Polish names are basically a meme and I always just called them certain pet names and now they're dead.
I'm Michael - or Michal in Polish. I lucked out I guess.
I don't have strong familial connections in any case.
I can't remember my grammas name, why should I remember whose the fictional parents of a fictional show I watched over a few years?
In a similar vien ive read the entire Malazan Book of the Fallen series twice and I can't currently think of a single character.
I have such an influx of things to entertain me that I just don't care about keeping that sort of information.
Ok but Amazon Studios is also the studio behind my second favorite film of all time, 2018's Suspiria. Which cost nothing and made even less. So I don't know if I'm supposed to root for this billion dollar bullshit of a show to succeed or fail so they make eventually better content that they are capable of producing, even if only on accident.
The looting in SF is still front & center culture war stuff and it's currently ongoing?
Maybe (maybe but I don't believe it) they don't mean Poles but I've been living in America for the last 30 years - pretty sure I'm invited aboard the white hate brigade.
That's crazy - one of the reasons to vote for Republicans, not that it helps, is to stop the ever lasting flood of non-Westernized immigrants to the country.
There's many things you can do to confirm the world around you to something along the lines of your ideal wants.
The problem with whitey is that I was born on a rabbit farm in communist Poland and don't have anything inherently in common with a Frenchman, a dude from Cali, a Swede, nor a guy from Northern Florida whereas oftentimes, people with black skin seem to feel some sort of absurdist kinsmanship with other people of their skin color - most especially in the US.
I'm sure there's many good and valid reasons for this but for a simpleton like me it seems absurdly racist.
So I don't see a 'rising' of whitey but I also don't feel very strongly about being correct here. I see myself being pushed into the white sphere by what I consider anti white racism - which in turn makes me understand the brotherly plight of the American black better.
I've never gotten banned from here, only Reddit, and I've been posting under several usernames since the bans for compliance have started happening. The first was RedMikeYawn I believe and then we'll it doesn't matter.
I used the simplest language here of what I consider long time posters - even tho I don't stick out or make many acquaintance due to the name changes - and only received one warning on my first ever (I believe) post. This was because I found this place before I found Scott Alexander which confused everyone. So then I lurked for a bit before posting again.
No one's brought it up so either the op here is incorrect or I write more eloquently than I thought.

Boston Celtics coach Ime Udoka is likely facing a suspension for the entire 2022-2023 season for his role in a consensual relationship with a female staff member, sources tell ESPN. A formal announcement is expected as soon as today.
The details aren't fully know yet but it's a bombshell of a news story for any sports fan, especially the NBA. It seems to be that the coach of the Boston Celtics had a completely consensual sexual relationship with a member of the Celtics staff and now the coach is getting suspended for the entire season. Not sure about discipline for the woman.
The Celtics went to the Finals last year (Heat fan gripe: the refs were the reason the Celts made it past the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals - I've never been as heated {ha!} In my life over anything sports related in 30 years of watching as I have over this series) and this guy is considered THE up and coming coach.
He's married also.
What I'm seeing a lot of online is something along the lines of: you can't have a relationship with a subordinate, he deserves this, if not to be fired outright. Personally, I feel the statement of ' it's non of your damn business ' would have sufficed. This would apply to this guy on the Celtics or some head honcho at GNC or Walmart.
What does The Motte think?
a journalist
How is Trace a journalist? He's just some guy that posts online and produces a podcast for two people who are I guess quasi-journalists still.
I don't think indigenous people in the US should have any extra rights to anything, nor should they be allowed their own ghetto enclaves in which to live. It's embarrassing. They lost the war(s) and now live in cattle pans while a select few get rich because they get to have casinos. It's absurdism.
All my family is in Poland aside from my sister and two nieces - I have nothing to say about Britain - but all my poor friends have so much more disposable income and so many more things to do with said money then my middle class cousins ever could, even today. Those cousins still live at home (in a different sense than here in the US - both just built houses on their parents land), have no debt, healthcare is cheap, etc ... They maybe have an easier life, in fact I'm sure of it, but they are poorer in almost every sense of the word by a significant margin to the US poor or lower middle class.
The first reviewer I really ever followed was Wesley Morris when he came over to Grantland. I hate read all his reviews and articles and basically thought he was a race hustler who saw everything through the lens of race - but God damn he was really interesting! I finally knew why people used to hate listen to Howard Stern. When Grantland died I basically stopped following him (anyone remember Grantland? - I feel it was the Internet's last mainstream experimental hurrah) but I still remember and occasionally read some of his stuff.
I think most reviews nowadays are trash. Places like IGN are clearly paid for the top games to be positively reviewed and I can only imagine the movie sites are too. Oddly enough every few months I Google something like ' best metal album of so and so ' or ' metal bands with chick lead singers ' and I'll read some articles on cool sounding websites - I've been doing this for decades now it seems and I can't even say if I've gone back to the same site twice ... So many metal sites! They all seem basically how I remember them 25+ years ago.
For most reviews, and this includes LetterBox which I got into for a few years, it's wading through woke bunk. I just find it disinteresting. God forbid I want a review about a fantasy book. Although funny enough I read a review for Children of Time that made me pick it up and it involves communist female led space spiders and I think it's fucking fantastic - about 75% done with it. So you never know.
Zero.
I have a friend who has been suicidally depressed all of his life. After he had covid twice, possibly three times (we all did - meaning my friend group), he now had all the symptoms that he's always had but blamed it on long covid while I politely kept silent.
I do think people who were / are overly worried about covid probably now have more depressive symptoms but I just don't know any of these people. I live in South Florida - not the culture.
Also, no one I associate with is getting their energy sapped from culture war fights. That's just a mega online thing that mostly doesn't happen in real life. Note however that I'm not saying the culture war hasn't exploded into our modern lives over the last decade, it's just different than what you're referring to here.
Per usual, Trump is god-damn right (insert Breaking Bad gif) ... death and decline in America is much worse than any other part of the world, but most especially the past of the world that for 2,000 years is unchanged - with all the negatives that entails. Sure, the almost 2,000 US deaths there is a shame, but the 175,000(ish) death of the Afghani are, I don't know, worth less than the weekend murders in Chicago. It's obviously a shame, it makes me hate America so much, I wish those Afghan's could be fat pieces of shit like me drinking IPA's on Halloween night while watching MNF and possibly ordering Mexican food (imagine an Afghani burrito? Bet that shit would be tight), but they're not. They're some kind of other that isn't me and it's a travesty. But fuck if we can't even make our own better, TF are we gonna do with the average Afghani? Let them live their lives? Ok - but that life is objectively terrible.
