I feel like there's a critical piece of the puzzle that you and DeBoer seem to be ignoring.
As others have already pointed out, Tyson was arrested, convicted, and incarcerated. That he appears to have turned over a new leaf post release (who here would've predicted that "Iron Mike" would become a champion of childrens' literacy and classical education 20 years ago?) is a major part of why he enjoys a "jolly folk hero" reputation today. After all, who doesn't love a redemption arc?
In contrast characters like Woody Allen and Roman Polansky have largely managed to avoid formal punishment and their defenders have a nasty habit of insisting that what they did wasn't actually objectionable (see Whoopi Goldberg's infamous "it wasn't 'rape' rape" comments). From a midwestern normie's perspective this only reinforces the perception that Hollywood and the New York theater scene are wretched hives of scum and villainy.

It's not "kicking the Iranian hornets' nest" so much as it is business as usual. The Iranian leadership likes to use the ambiguity of the IRGC's (Islamic Revolutionary Guard's) non-government/military status as a means to launder their support for various militant groups in the region. That said, I don't think anyone who follows middle eastern politics is under any illusions about where Hamas or the Houthis are getting their munitions from. Meanwhile, Israel's historical response to such technicalities has often been something to the effect of "damn
the torpedoesinternational opinion, full speed ahead", and this would seem to fit that pattern.More options
