For all the issues I have with the uni > PR pathway, it does seem to be a good mix of cash injection into the Australian economy with university as an IQ/conscientiousness screen. My big issue is the rubber stamping of international students through the kayfabe of 'group assignments' with native students which waters down the later screening.


An alternative to the 'golden visa' that is often used is a 'business investment' visa which gives you eventual PR for investing in the local economy. This has the downside of creating a whole subsidiary ecosystem of local companies that keep a bunch of businesses on their books to sell to prospective immigrants. How it works is that you go to a local agent who is fluent in your language of choice. They sell you a Chinese restaurant/grocery store. The business is not incredibly profitable, but doesn't always make a loss. After 3-5 years showing financial statements you get PR and then sell the business back to the agent to be recycled for the next immigrant. Yes within reason, if you live in a modern construction with a concrete slab under you. You should be fine with a setup like this as long as you don't start powerlifting. I don't intend to ever lift more than 100kg/220lbs. If you're really worried and have timber floorboards you might want to do some research on maximum weight, but its really unlikely to be problem.


Also you need to make sure that you have some floor protection if you're in a rental (see my flattened cardboard even though its a bare concrete slab). Ideally you would use rubber tiles (~1m x 1m x 10+mm) for a permanent fitout. Things can be mitigated by using rubber coated plates like I'm using the picture and also by making sure you don't ever drop the bar unless its an emergency. I think it's good general opsec to change handles over the medium to long term (6 months to 2+years depending on your risk tolerance). It's not just about posting spicy opinions, but the fact that the internet is forever and you don't know what advances in technology (AI scraping), the social landscape (authoritarians getting into power), and even your personal views and desire for privacy changing in the future. Swapping handles and being reasonably careful about dropping too much identifying information is just a good practice to get into and well worth the 5% of the time you'd like to share something but can't because it might let people/AI connect the dots.


My handle here is too similar to one I used on another forum, but I've since used a tool to overwrite past comments to cover my tracks. I think it's just demand driven. Home gyms are cheap compared to ongoing gym fees so buyers are willing to pay more. The plates also keep their value as long as they're functional, which is years and years unless treated badly or left exposed to the elements. Even with cosmetic damage they are perfectly functional. They're just heavy things to be lifted. Once purchased there is rarely a need to buy more.


I sold a similar home gym about 5 years ago when moving long distance. I had bought it for $US450 and sold it for about $380 after 3 years of use. The buyer rang the same day it was listed and picked it up an hour after his call paying in cash. I don't have anything to add but I really approve of a thread like this. So much of the internet world is about tearing things down and not building things up.


Ok, I'll half arse this. Here is my recently built 'home gym'. I sourced this from multiple suppliers and got it for a reasonable price (<US$700).


This is 'project complete' so don't need any support. I strongly recommend others to build home gyms for convenience and lack of ongoing costs. On the back of revelations that the IBA banned Khelif mid tournament some time ago and that Carini has now issued an apology, the IBA is gifting Carini a US$50k payout as if she had won a gold medal..


This is after the IOC recently discredited the IBA for banning Khelif 'without due process mid tournament':




These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA. Towards the end of the IBA World Championships in 2023, they were suddenly disqualified without any due process.






“According to the IBA minutes available on their website, this decision was initially taken solely by the IBA Secretary General and CEO. The IBA Board only ratified it afterwards and only subsequently requested that a procedure to follow in similar cases in the future be established and reflected in the IBA Regulations. Vipassana has 'pay it forward' 'free' 10 day meditation retreats around the world. I've been on a couple in my life and found them very rewarding. You basically vow to follow Buddhist precepts for the retreat including: Vow of silence, no eye contact, vegan diet, harm no-one (try not to step on ants etc), and living to a regimented schedule of meditation, eating, sleeping. I have a half baked idea. Nationalise and centralise the training of state police under a 'National Police Bureau' (a joint exercise between say the FBI and US Marshal Service) similar to how the National Guard operates.


Then once trained, the police are deployed to their home state to operate under local command and control (eg police chief under the mayor/governor) to allay fears of federal control of the police forces. It could also be an avenue for internal investigation so local cops can't cover up bad shootings/dirty cops. Certain incidents automatically escalate to a review from out of the state investigators.


This standardisation of best practice vetting and training will eliminate some low hanging fruit leading to bad shootings and other incidents. Much less hiring of people that should never have become cops. Yeah, this isn't 'cop was stood down pending the outcome of an internal investigation'. He was straight up fired and hit with 3 counts of first degree murder.


The district attorney could have gone with that for optics/political reasons, but I think its more likely that the police executive would have also used their '0.1% top ability to read the situation' from the footage and come to the correct decision.
