This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Is it really imperialism though if Jordan and Egypt consented to being invaded?
Did I mention Jordan or Egypt?
Do you know who the West Bank belonged to before Israel took it in '67? How about Gaza? Hint: The answer isn't "Palestine". What I'm suggesting is that if the Arab League and their cheerleaders/apologists in academia had genuinely wanted the 1948 partition to be respected they would've respected the 1948 borders.
Vae Victis indeed.
You don't need to do imperialism against a state, you can do it against nations. The Arab League wanted land occupied by Palestinians for themselves in 1948. I'm not going to lick their boots and say Arabs, Arab states or Islam are great and wonderful. They're not pure-hearted victims who never did anything wrong.
The Palestinians and Arabs thought that the 1948 agreement was unfair since Israel got awarded a majority of the land, a great deal of land that was owned by Palestinians. They then fought and lost a war with Israel. So be it - why are we bootlicking Israel to the tune of billions of dollars and taking on huge diplomatic and economic costs to help them out?
I'm sure you don't think that the details of the 1948 agreement have any relevance to our support for Israel. The reason Israel gets all this US support is because of intensive, effective lobbying and propaganda work, not because of some 70-year old piece of paper. Furthermore, I'm not talking about 1948, I'm talking about now or at least the 21st century.
We aren't "Bootlicking Israel" though. We are offering them a relatively small portion of our Military Industrial Complex's total output in exchange for Raytheon, LockMart, NGC, BAE, Et Al using their backyard as a live-fire R&D lab and getting first crack at any patents their engineers might file.
The ways you can tell that the OP and others' claims about Israel being dependent on the US are being made from a place of either bad faith or extreme ignorance, is that it's readily apparent for all to see that even without the 10 - 20 billion dollars a year Israel receives from the US they would still be a nuclear power with a robust domestic manufacturing capability and a broadly "first world" standard of living.
Meanwhile Gaza without the 10 billion or so in combined US and EU aid it receives each year would be living in the 17th century. No Electricity, no motorized Transportation, and looking down the barrel of some extreme food and water shortages.
What comparisons are there are don't compare at all.
That's at least a factor of 10 overestimate.
And that's all aid, not just EU and US! Where are you getting your numbers from?
Israel is hardly a live fire testing ground, not since 1973. It's not like they're fighting high end wars, they're dealing with insurgencies and light infantry. The US clearly hasn't learnt any useful lessons on this front - indeed US support for Israel makes it harder since it creates all these new and exciting enemies. Osama Bin Laden for instance. We don't need to infuriate hundreds of millions of people to 'test' bombs or missile defence systems against sub-Scud tier rockets.
Regardless of the situation with Palestine (which also isn't our problem except in that we help Israel bully them), we should not be assisting a state that creates so many bitter and troublesome enemies for us. If it weren't for direct US aid and geopolitical assistance like the war in Iraq, they probably wouldn't have the borders they have now, they'd likely be pre-1967.
The Arab Oil Embargo, the Iraq War, this mess in the Red Sea, not to mention the USS Liberty - Israel is a massive deadweight that needs to be dropped, the sooner the better.
Do you really not listen to the rhetoric from US politicians?
Pelosi couldn't get the boot out of her mouth if she tried: "I have said to people when they ask me, If this Capitol crumbled to the ground, the one thing that would remain would be our commitment to our aid, I don’t even call it our aid, our cooperation with Israel. That’s fundamental to who we are."
Pompeo: "There is no more important task of the Secretary of State than standing for Israel and there is no more important ally to the United States than Israel. There is much more work to do."
Im wondering where they got their numbers or if they are trying to pull some statistical tom fuckery as US aid to Gaza in 2020 alone was something like 2.5 billion. Heck we've sent them 0.2 billion in the last month and our contributions tend to run "light" compared to those of the EU, UN, Saudis, and Qatar.
As for the Arabs, their beef with us, IE Anglos/The West, goes way back. Way farther than 1948, The notion that Arab animosity towards us and middle eastern instability is somehow to blame on Israel is mostly "a cope" invented by woke liberal MBA students who've never been outside the country and who couldn't tell a Sunni form a Shia if their life depended on it because a simple narrative of "Joos Bad" is far more palatable to modern liberal tastes than an honest accounting of the history.
Not really, no.
Do you seriously believe that a politician's rhetoric is a reasonable proxy for truth? If so, I have a bridge to sell you.
A man is what he does, not what he says.
From April 2021 to March 2022, the US gave about half a billion dollars to Palestine, according to themselves: https://www.state.gov/u-s-support-for-the-palestinian-people/
Wikipedia says about 600 million per year from the US on average. Again, I ask where are you getting your numbers from?
The West and the Islamic world have been in conflict since the latter showed up. But Israel clearly has serious effects in the here and now. Osama Bin Laden waxed lyrical about how he hated Israel, how the West was ultimately behind the Israelis (which is true), killing Muslims in Lebanon and elsewhere.
If we give billions of dollars in munitions to Israel and Israel kills Muslims with them, this will anger the Islamic world. Simple as. Angering the Islamic world is expensive and dangerous. It's not like the US ever had any colonies in MENA, why else would they hate America so much? .
I see your narrative and I raise you US evangelicals pathetically one-sided simping for Israel and Jews generally. They even go and provide free labour in Israel: https://www.wgbh.org/news/2012-03-11/christians-provide-free-labor-on-jewish-settlements
US politicians profess to love and adore Israel. Lo and behold, they give Israel every kind of assistance regardless of how much damage it does to US interests. Pompeo and others are evangelicals too, they see support for Israel as a holy cause.
