This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

I just want rpgs where therenis a fully fleshed out option to have the morality of e.g., tyranny. A game where I finally felt like I was coming home and actually doing the right thing and not twisting myself to be a saccharine neon ghost reflection of what I want.
There is no role playing in almost all other rpgs, even the bioware classics are, in hindsight, empty and devoid of role playing and characterisation of the type I want.
I could overlook the gay and genitals if there was at least a well developed E.g., well actually conquest and slavery , etc is right and just and this is the order of the world, etc pathwya that wasn't just the retarded stupid kill the orphans for an extra 3 pennies style "evil".
Does BG3 have that?
I want to say yes because I think that's roughly what the evil playthrough looks like, but I haven't actually done an evil playthrough yet so I can't say for certain. I do know that you can side with the "let's dominate the world" party, and a la Mr. House make your own "let's dominate the world" party. I'm fairly sure these don't involve copious amounts of killing orphans, though some orphans do end up dead.

Probably not. BG3 main quest seems to revolve about foiling another mind-flayer multiverse domination method.
It might be there, however, outright taking over places is probably not an option because D&D characters get into demigod levels at 25 or so, and game ends with level 12.
It's certain that you can play as a might-makes right type, or being cruel or making bargains with evil creatures in pursuit of PC's interests.
There seems to be a lot of different options for solving things and outcomes aren't obvious.

I haven't played BG3 yet b/c I don't buy new games until they are at least 6+ months old so I'm not sure. However you may find the tyrannical options you are interested in in the RPG named...Tyranny.

I've played through it a few times for the different story arcs available. It was pretty good.
I was interested in it and almost bought it. Good to be reminded of it..

That'd what I am referring to, the rpg tyranny. It's moral world makes more sense to me than any other rpg I have played, and I cnst stomach the wrongness of the moral choices in the normal style games anymore.

So far, it's been hit and missed. But it's a long game and I'm pretty sure there's multiple paths... A lot of it could just be the path I picked
