Culture Peace Roundup threads?

A suggestion: to avoid especially acrimonious discussion and SSC-posting being our only hallmarks as an independent community, let’s discuss things we can generally come together on.

In a Culture Peace thread, I’d expect to see:

  1. An explanation of part of one’s own culture/group identity/tribally specific hobby one feels is misunderstood, without denigrating those who misunderstand

  2. Events or news stories which genuinely sow harmony instead of discord

  3. Suggestions for additional Culture Peace actions we can do on The Motte, elsewhere online, and in real life

Generally third worlders who immigrate to a 1st world nation just want to live a better life. Living a better life doesn't mean they wish to throw away their entire cultural identity at once. It may be closer to the truth for you to imagine that whenever you meet a 1st generation immigrant their grandson will be the equivalent of what you imagine a fully assimilated native member of your nation to be. You aren't immigrating more citizens to your land ( in the cultural sense not the legal one), you are immigrating more people whose children will be citizens of your land ( in the assimilated and culturally following your country's traditions way).

The people most likely to use a peace initiative are the ones least likely to need it (and vice versa). Scott had a relevant post about advice being followed that way.

I fear that doing this will just lead to another "scrupulous people become more afraid of hurting everyone, and actual aggressors ignore the advice", except with culture war.

In sadder news, the Heterodox Out Loud podcast from Jon Haidt’s Heterodox Academy has ended. Its archives are still up.

I actually rather like this idea.

Lemme put it on a TODO list; my plate is absurdly full right now.

Big worry: I don't want to split conversation up too much, especially given that we're likely to take a population hit.

In that case, I'm likely to just preface such items with "Culture Peace Item" in the Culture War thread.

I absolutely encourage you to do so :)

One real-world action we could take, given our deep understanding of the culture war, would be to support the revitalization or republication of the materials of The Institute for Propaganda Analysis:

The Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA) was a U.S.-based organization operating from 1937 to 1942, composed of social scientists, opinion leaders, historians, educators, and journalists. Created by Kirtley Mather, Edward A. Filene, and Clyde R. Miller, because of the general concern that increased amounts of propaganda were decreasing the public's ability to think critically. The IPA's purpose was to spark rational thinking and provide a guide to help the public have well-informed discussions on current issues. "To teach people how to think rather than what to think." The IPA focused on domestic propaganda issues that might become possible threats to the democratic ways of life.

These "ABCs of Propaganda Analysis" encouraged readers to understand and analyze their own views on propagandistic material in order to promote informed, thought-provoking discussions:

  • Ascertain the conflict element in the propaganda.
  • Behold your own reaction element.
  • Concern yourself with today's propaganda associated with today's conflicts.
  • Doubt that your opinions are "your very own".
  • Evaluate, therefore, with the greatest care your own propaganda.
  • Find the facts before you come to any conclusion.

Easier might be 1928's Propaganda as it is less obscure.
