Seconding what a few others have said. This was a fun read, and, was so because of your knowledge and interest in the subject.

When I was single I used to wear Creed’s Bois du Portugal in fall and winter. It had the most longevity of anything I’ve ever worn (not that the list is too long). I’d get hit with a big whiff of it again, the following morning in the shower, from the previous morning’s spritz.

There’s an okayish Substack/podcast run by some old, aughts former menswear bloggers, David Coggins and Michael Williams, called Central Division. I don’t think it’s worth the subscription price, but one of the better topics they’ve discussed with some regularly is finding what’s good enough.

I’m no longer single. My closet is full of Press/Andover/O’Connell’s/Brooks/Kamakura. St. John’s seems like the right, good-enough fit for me. Bay Rum > Madras > Caneel > 77 > West Indian Lime > Vetiver, for use in coldest to hottest weather. Bottles last several years and currently, I can restock for around $50/ea. if I wait on a sale. And it’s got a nice midcentury Americana heritage.
