Culture War Roundup for the week of November 4, 2024

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

What are the factions and members of those factions (both actual politicians and thought leaders/influencers) of the incoming Trump administration? Trump has developed quite a large tent while he was out of office but I think they will have some big fights once they actually need to do things and not simply criticize the democrats. (?) are people where I'm unsure where to categorize

Tech right: Musk, Thiel, Yarvin(?)

Podcast bro: Joe Rogan, Theo Von, RFK (?)

Populist/Pro-worker right (Is this category even real?): Vance(?), Hawley, Tucker(?), Matt Walsh

Trump loyalist: Bannon, Miller, Trump Jr. (?)

Neocons/Deficit Hawks/Old GOP: Kushner, McConnell, Senate republicans that held their nose and supported Trump despite clearly hating him, Ben Shapiro

Are there any categories I'm missing? Is anyone placed wrong? Am I missing any key people? I also want news and podcasts to follow from each faction, here is my list so far, and I'm open for suggestions.

Tech right: A lot of the big and more intellectually interesting right wing accounts on X, Pirate Wires podcast, I'd guess most right wing people here are in this category

Podcast bro: JRE when he invites political people

Populist/Pro-worker right (Is this category even real?): Tucker(?)

Trump loyalist: Bannon's War Room

Neocons/Deficit Hawks: Wall Street Journal opinions, Fox, the token conservative on places like the NYT opinion articles

He has announced the Pomeo and Haley won't be joining this time. https://x.com/wikileaks/status/1855399528909701537

I'm say this is the Deep state category, good to have it confirmed that they will not be joining.

With all the category listed, remove the ones he no longer needs and keep the ones he still needs for executing or passing bills.

Of course he will need his guy to get elected again in 4 years to make sure he doesn't get put in jail or his business or legacy destroyed.

You're definitely missing the Social Conservative faction, as well as the Right-Libertarian group (e.g., the rumors about Ron Paul). You're also missing whatever group Tulsi Gabbard belongs to -- she's close to but definitely distinct from the 'podcast bro' set.

Also, by my reckoning the Neo-Cons are mostly out of the GOP (they broadly became the '#NeverTrump' set), so most of the 'Old GOP' who's left are better identified as the 'Establishment GOP'. The GOP establishment includes a number of 'lanes' -- you do have deficit-hawks and fiscal conservatives, but you also have the 'Rockefeller Republicans', and yes, a bunch of 'interventionists' who want America to be more proactive in combating Russia, Iran, China, etc., and propping up NATO and Israel and our other allies. (I would distinguish these from the Cheney-esque Neo-Cons; the interventionist group has been around a lot longer than the group responsible for our 'nation-building' in Iraq and Afghanistan).
