I previously sang the praises of Only Connect, my favourite game show. It is now back for series 20, with a brave youtube user evading the BBC censors for us. The first episodes of each new series are generally easier with it ramping up in difficulty towards the end.

Great recommendation, reminds me of Ken Jennings Kennections for Mental Floss.

I’ve always thought American game shows are overly simplistic. My quizbowl friends and I in high school would watch University Challenge together. Much less serious is the Big Fat Quiz of the Year.

Random thought but it seems like game shows are much more regional than other media. Americans do like British TV and vice versa but we never seem to watch your game shows, and the rest of the world seems to have no idea how Jeopardy works.

I like the concept, but from the 2 episodes I watched it seems too heavy on British-centered celebrity or popular culture for me to fully enjoy. For now University Challenge remains my personal favorite quiz show.

You got me completely hooked on Only Connect with that post, by the way. I have watched so many back episodes these last few months.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
