The slow but inexorable march toward the complete indistinguishability of Hong Kong from any other mainland China city continues: Hong Kong unveils its second national security law, aligning city more closely with mainland China
The proposed law, while somewhat similar to western measures on its face includes broad definitions for purported national security concerns. Penalties for violation can include up to life in prison.
Of note, this was initially proposed in 2003 and sparked the massive scale protests then. Full text of the proposed article here.

but when John McCrae can put out himself Worm and Pact as shows, or when the many successful Royal Road writers can make shows of their works, or when some guy in his basement can produce Peter Jackson's Rise and Fall of Gondolin, when Orson Scott Card (who I hope will leap at the tech) can make adaptations of the Speaker and Shadows Saga.
This is what I want - world building visionaries being fully able to build and share worlds.

One is reminded of the Chinese parable where the penalty for being late is death.
This is absolutely irrelevant to anything you are saying, but man, I had forgotten how biting some of the earlier SSC posts are.
Age really does make congenial, erudite but uninteresting milksops of us all.

Hong Kong always makes me sad. If ever there was a modern poster child for the axiom that the only rights you have are the ones you can enforce, it's Hong Kong. All the peaceful protest in the world won't sway an unsympathetic tyrant.

I think you really misunderstand how divided things are in Ukraine
This sums up a lot of Western thinking in a nutshell. I'm not at all advocating for abandoning Ukraine or partitioning the country, but the situation, culture, and history of those two countries is complex.
Making statements that Ukraine would cease to exist as a people if back under Moscovian suzerainty just evinces a lack of understanding of that history and the people themselves.
Maybe then I'll finally be able to get a decent hi-lux
