Hmm, but then why do I hear stereotypes about various central American or SE Asian countries being very friendly? I'm sure there are many rude tourists there, but somehow they come away thinking everyone is nice.

Oh my God I am just completely mind fucked for the night. It's like a ZHPL story. I just don't even... I'm watching a YouTuber talk about his phone call with Egon Cholokian and I'm just... So confused. My best hypothesis is "low-popularity Youtuber sees this weird story on Destiny's channel and wanted to make a fun stream about it by pretending that he had a phone call with a possibly-AI character" and it makes me crazy because it's so dumb but the least dumb hypothesis I can think of.

I don't get it. If B went first, it couldn't cheat?

It also explains why having a high IQ doesn’t appear to be related to skill in music composition

What's your source here? I've certainly read that musical ability is positively correlated with IQ, but it seems that maybe there's something you know about music composition specifically?

I am Chinese in origin, and I can confidently say that if outsiders moved in and learned and spoke Chinese and did so for a thousand years, they would still be foreigners. (No one thinks that Mongols are Chinese.)

Yes but no one thinks the Mongols immigrated "recently".

The point here is that it's not people saying "we don't like foreigners" but rather criticizing policies that are not 20 years old.

I (American) remember ordering two beers at an English pub, holding up two fngers, palm-inward, and being told by the bartender something to the effect of "Mate, never do that. Palm facing me."

What exactly is a "continued call"? Do you think Scott should be posting on every example of cancel culture? He (and many others) have been consistently against it.

I think this is an appeal to take the outside view. If your reference class is "partisans who feel strongly that their current enemy is the most evil thing ever" then you see that other members of that class are mistaken about their attributions of evil.

I've gobbled up everything ZHPL has written except that one; I didn't finish it. I guess it was supposed to be funny in an over the top kind of way? Idk it just didn't grab me at all.

I can't help but disagree here. Lots of 21-year-olds like kinky sex. Not to mention with a celebrity! WhT a bonus! Where's the immorality?

But the latter is arguably preferable if there is more productivity. Sure, the cram schools example works well be ause there doesn't actually appear to be much value in the additional knowledge. But a bunch of, say, programmers on Adderall means we all get to enjoy more and better software.

I wonder if it has to do with increased marijuana use. My impression is that it has skyrocketed the past few years, and most people don't think driving stones is dangerous.

I think stating that she goes to church, and emphasizing the religion's role in answering ultimate questions makes me think she's actually talking about converting.

And if you were there, you would know that the "proto-woke" side was the creationist intelligent design one.

idk, Scott makes a compelling case that the proto-woke side was the atheists. That coheres with my personal experience as well. https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/10/30/new-atheism-the-godlessness-that-failed/

So in all seriousness... are you going to write a book? I'd buy it.

In my experience, it's the losers that do most of the bullying. The kids with dysfunctional families who don't have anything going for them. The actually smart, successful, socially adept and resilient kids... often do a lot of posturing and casually put others down... but the kids who go out of their ways to be bullies are not our future stars.

Yeah, that middle school was a horrible horrible time for me, filled with with what would rightly be classified is ongoing physical abuse and verbal harassment in an adult context. The setting of middle school makes bullying a much bigger issue than most people will ever encounter as adults.

I don't know what the best solution is -- I don't want kids' lives getting ruined because they were a dick as a 12-year-old -- but I think it's perfectly appropriate for a school to investigate and take serious action on it.

This looks like a job for Manifold Markets.

You missed money. Many Mr Beast episodes play out fantasies about being ridiculously rich (often in a generous or silly way).

No reports from people with pacemakers who tried cooking with induction and died.

A very literal example of survivorship bias.

I think the "get more resources" one is considered likely because it is an important to subgoal to "make sure not to get shut off" to... ANY goal.

Even nuclear weapons proliferation was only slowed because the vast majority of countries have little need for nukes, or are or were protected under existing alliance systems.

I would love to see this with AI. If the world all agreed to slow the duck down in exchange for getting to benefit from the AI we have developed/do develop, that would be great.

I think TRN's statement could be fairly glossed as "The primary cause of this shooting was the oppression that trans people face."

That has scissor potential.

What exactly is your prior here when you say it's a psyop? That no one actually came and shot people? That the shooter was a government agent?

Sure, I'm off on my terminology. Here's what I mean by the problem, maybe you can help me put it into economic terms:

If you and I share the market of soda evenly, and I price mine too high, you can double your production and take all my business. You can't really do that with land.

ETA: just want to acknowledge that yes, it was dumb to use an obviously technical term in a made-up way. My use of the terms I think is like this: It is a "monopoly" in that others are prevented from entering the market, and it is "natural" in that the barrier to entry is the fixed supply/location of land.
