I'm glad you brought up Maoism, because I wanted to reiterate the interesting fact that modern leftists hate their victims with a level of malice that the actual men who fought the civil war never felt towards each other.
This is because you see all forms of conflict through a Maoist lens in which the goal of all Struggle is the victor subjecting the losers to "extermination as a class." The concept of a limited war with a goal other than Mao's 你死我活: "you die, I live" is alien to leftists.
This should be kept in mind by all parties in the conflict.

The thing that nags at me is continuity and habit. What we do to villagers in minecraft is never going to seamlessly switch to becoming "real," if only because wooden doors don't work that way IRL. But it seems likely that the things we do to sophisticated models will, at some point in their development, start to constitute doing things to a sentient being. Will we notice?

"He Must Respond" is a tactic used to justify further attacks against the target in environments where the original accusations don't carry enough weight.
When the attackers use the response as an excuse to escalate because the victim "did not reflect on his guilt" or "perpetuated further harm by minimizing his offenses", the debate can be shifted away from the original accusations to a deconstruction of the victim's conduct during the ordeal.
This tactic works extremely well on discussion forums where people are inclined to entertain hypotheticals and can be led away from the original topic. For example, the endless rounds of "Damore should have phrased it better," which ignored the absurdity of the accusations and shifted the burden of proof back to the defender.
I don't actually like Internet Historian. I've only watched his Fyre Festival video and didn't really enjoy the lolinternetmeme format that came across as a tamer, animated Encyclopedia Dramatica article.
