How did birth control really work before condoms/pills/spirals? If I google for this I get all sorts of weird factoids (sheep skin condoms, animal dung vagina blocking something etc) that makes me think that people probably had other less weird/disgusting methods. After all there were societies with fertility rates around 2 and even below before these technologies

I used to like some of his unz archive posts. Remember spending reading his blogs for a whole day at some point when I was forced to sit with my smartphone unable to do anything else. But the guy is essentially an unserious alienated twitter brained weirdo. His attachment to Russian nationalism was cringe and fake. His current attachment to gay AI apocalypse is even worse. He must be taken as a prime example of why introvert smart guys need to eventually cut off parasocial interactions, find a woman and make some kids.

Will definitely go check it out at an Apple Store if it’s possible to test it when released. If it lives up to the extraordinary promises and very good reviews (and apple has a good track record of this) I expect it to cause a new arms race and quickly collapsing prices in the field.

This doesn’t sound realistic without nuclear weapons. Israel has much superior technology but relies on America for it almost entirely as senior idf personnel openly and frequently admit. But then they do have nukes (although Iran might have them soon too)

Just because a sector has done well in the near past, it doesn’t mean it will keep doing so in the future as well. There is already a huge amount of future growth priced in the tech stocks. This is basically gambling with your money. Starting a business at least means you are putting your money on your own personal skills, network and competence as well as access to local information.

Can’t count because I rely on work catering for the big meal of the day (lunch). I had a period of strict calorie counting for fun a couple years ago and realised how many calories I was getting from snacking. I think if I break that habit I can have a consistent calorie deficit. But really difficult to break it honestly

Commitments time for the next year. New desk job and long commute messed up my habits and now I weight about 10-15kg more than I would like to. Also my lifts (very decent but not overly high number) haven’t increased during this time at all. So it’s almost entirely fat that I put on. Any suggestions? Is it sensible to try to get an ozempic prescription for a relatively little amount of weight like this? I am not doing so far with losing weight via simple self discipline.

The default conclusion of this conflict has always been that the Arabs eventually win. They have the numbers and the determination. They are anti-fragile in the sense that they can keep losing and only have to win once when stars align which will be the final victory. Israel's existence owes itself to a fragile set of geopolitical arrangements, and extraordinary competence and determination from a tiny population.
I can't help but think that whether Hamas intended this result or not, their attack has been extraordinarily successful. Israeli politics are entering a spiral of radicalization and low-IQ decision making that Arabs can afford, but Jews can't.

Being ruled by a culturally distinct elite is not an unusual condition for human societies. It is very much the norm. European colonization simply meant that the culturally distinct elite came from a bit further away. Before the British, India was largely ruled by Islamic-Persian-Mongolic-Turkic elites. You will be hard-pressed to find many corners of the world where this is not the case. At most, the foreign elite just goes native and adapts to local customs after a while.
If you are looking for an explanation of why many modern independent nationalist "democratic" states are such failures, then you should perhaps realize that their current condition is a highly unusual development in history.

Sure but how many other African states were doing any sequencing? Or even any substantial testing? It’s quite possible that the variant was evolving in Africa for a long while until it was discovered in South Africa. Also if you were a super duper shady institution releasing modified viruses into the wild you would probably not release in your own country and not even somewhere it can be detected quickly. So black Africa is a perfect candidate

Is the book any good? I read some about the Arab Israeli conflict before but I am always annoyed how every author skirts around the central fact of the entire conflict: Jews are extremely competent again and again while Arabs are extraordinarily incompetent. It’s disturbing how every book casually takes it for granted that one idf tank battalion is worth about 3 Syrian battalions. I would love to read something that doesn’t try to blindside me to this reality

I have been suspecting for a while that the governments have been so tolerant of crypto currency stuff because it’s actually a great way for intelligence agencies to move serious black money around without getting into Iran contra style problems.
I have always been taught that this is not an actually effective method. Was this wrong?
