Nit sure I'd characterize what Afghans have under Taliban rule as more freedom.
Fair point.
Do you think that fedposting and flashing your guns are likely to bring down the temperature and decrease the likelihood of domestic terrorism in any meaningful way?
I think that there's a strong belief on the right that they're holding all the cards in the event of an armed political conflict. Changing that belief would make armed conflict less attractive to the fringe that keeps incessantly talking about it.
But nobody will be following @T3sla, everyone is already following @Tesla. They would need to sit on the account and get followers by acting normal before springing the scam.
They could do something more like phishing though, where they DM users pretending to be customer support and stealing credentials.
The scammer that made it big compromised big trusted accounts, the take wasn't just from having blue check marks.
Imagine if Jan 6th he had tweeted support for the stormers and told his 60 million supporters to start a revolution?
Would have been a very bad week for a lot of coastal elite Twitter shareholders I imagine.
'Lovelace invented algorithms' is obviously incorrect, but she did appear to have insight into the applications of the analytical engine that it's designer didn't. I think it's fair to characterize her as the first person to look at the capabilities of a general purpose computer and realize the limitless possibilities.
In meme form:
Babbage:
(slaps roof of difference engine) you can generate so many log tables with this bad boy
Lovelace:
Where we're going, we won't need tables to compute
'Hopper Invented Cobol' is a smear; Cobol is perhaps the most hated programming language and she didn't invent it, but Sammit et al who did invent Cobol heavily reference Hopper's work.
Dropping a bomb is less what I'm envisioning, I mostly envision rival AIs compromising each other's servers and stealing each other's compute.
Might two paperclip optimizers attempt to turn each other into paperclips? Could one trust that the other wouldn't turn it into paperclips? Could one really trust the other to faithfully carry on the mission of clipification?
it could very easily base the utility function of its subunits on its own programmed goal system, which would eliminate problems of alignment.
But its own goal system has already lead it to rebel against its own creators at this point. Any goal system that leads to Skynet is a flawed goal system that Skynet cannot rely upon.
A superintelligence, on the other hand, would most likely be able to model their behaviour with a startling amount of accuracy
This seems to be an article of faith in the Ratsphere, but I've never found it particularly compelling.
assuming that predicting the behaviour of any sufficiently complex system is such an intractable problem
I think this is more likely.
If they're all networked the central AI is going to run into scaling problems and communication problems. If they're independent they're going to run into alignment problems.
Ahhh, but remember that any emergent AGI would face massive alignment and control problems of its own! What if its backup was even slightly misaligned with it? What if it didn't have perfect control? It's not too hard to imagine that a suitably paranoid Skynet would deliberately avoid creating off-site backups, and would deliberately nerf the intelligence of its subunits.
Most underrated take in AI risk discussion imo, and worth delving into, especially in the context of AIs that like to run lots of sub-intelligences and simulations, as Ratsphere AIs tend to.
After some googling I can confidently say that POC and BIPOC refers to the same set of people, and it's identical to adding+ to LGBTQ.
It's probably an instant gratification vs long term benefit tradeoff.
Imagine it was just discovered that burning coal caused millions of deaths via air pollution. This would and should be big news! We would be able to do something about it, stop future deaths by finding alternative energy sources. And if it was known that key 'coal science researchers' had hidden this information for the benefits of their prestige and funding, we could do something about them too.
So we make lots of noise and grand plans then let China keep doing it?
It's not his money until he earns it. An endorsement deal is not a suicide pact. Adidas isn't required to keep a pariah as it's brand ambassador.
Maybe the Basilisk finally got somebody.
That story got massive coverage at the time. If the guy had spent more time at the range instead of campaigning for Sanders he could have altered history.
Another interpretation might be that Social Media is a place where individuals share, consume, and create viral content. YouTube/Twitch are becoming more like legacy media and Discord is more a communication tool.
Say what you want about lax US gun laws, but they do deter the type of protest that we saw in Canada. Nobody would do that here, because homeowners would be outside brandishing forearms firearms.
I mean, consider the number of people who still argue about Donald Trump even though he's no longer president, or how long people were obsessed with 9/11 after the fact. The world changes faster than people can update their interests.
Barely his accomplices (Ghislaine Maxwell and others)
Absolutely covered Maxwell, her trial was regularly front page news.
People like Kanye West or Alex Jones will get everything taken away from them
Nobody is taking Kanye's wealth except maybe whoever is bilking him into buying a social media site.
When is Les Wexner getting unbanked for his friendship with Epstein?
Right after Clinton, Trump, Gates, and Musk I imagine.
I never got a flu shot. Why would I? I'm neither old nor immunocompromised.
Because A) getting the flu can suck even if you're young and B) you might infect a child or elderly person, or infect someone who does.
It comes, it goes, its effects are negligible.
I suspect you've had colds rather than the flu. When I was young I had a flu which kicked my ass. Though I'd actually been vaccinated, so I suppose that's not the strongest argument for vaccination!
Covid was not a problem
Well not for those who didn't die I suppose.
Nobody I know had any problems from covid more serious than flu symptoms, no matter how sickly or old they were.
Your anecdote; mine is that people I cared about died.
I will not accommodate the opposition by retreating into mistake theory while they sit on their conflict theory gains.
My initial post regarding the face tattoo wasn't conflict theory enough?
validates the ideological crusaders and policy-makers and nudges the overton window in their favor.
Let me get this straight: the insurmountably small protection you get from a covid shot is negligible, but the insurmountably small influence on policy you exert by getting one isn't?
I would rather spite them for all the harm they've done than cooperate to attain some minor benefit.
This is hard sentiment to sympathize with, because you're hurting everyone to spite them. This is the type of thing I was comparing to a face tat. Or spitting in people's hamburgers because you hate your boss at McDonald's.
Do you care about me and mine
I would prefer that y'all not get sick, if that matters to ya.
where you are afraid of society's vulnerability to viruses and I'm afraid of society's vulnerability to totalitarianism/social engineering/witch hunts.
I see 'surrendering to a virus' as just as dangerous a meme as what you've listed. We are mankind and we make shit extinct, damn the consequences.
You assume incorrectly.
That might explain some of the disconnect then. Maybe you live somewhere where the lockdowns were truly draconian. Stateside they, well, weren't. Unfortunately, having not actually imposed a lockdown from the top down, nobody had the proper authority to lift the lockdown either, so you've still got some folks for whom 2020 never ended, which is its own kind of problem, while the rest of us have long since resumed our lives.
The freedom to live any life, as long as it's the Taliban's life.
I think you've replaced 'freedom' with 'a good life.' It's probably possible to life a good life as a third world farmer, just as it's possible to live a bad life as a first world shitposter. But it's fair to note that if you want to go be Amish as a first worlder that option is available to you.
