You know, that actor who played the bad guy in Two Weeks Notice

Most people don’t know Jack about constitutional law. Many of them thought Roe was the only thing keeping abortion legal and that it would automatically become illegal everywhere the second it was overturned. They probably think Trump can and will ban abortion with an executive order.

For me it was very early, in mid-2022 with the laughable NAFO/Sarah Cirillo/Private Lujan propaganda drive that absolutely failed to get most Americans on board with the Ukraine War.

Those types of memes were more popular with the far left, not liberals. The far left has gotten burnt out by the Gaza genocide (as they call it) and the increasingly neoliberal corporate bent of the Democratic Party. The far left is disgusted enough with Democrats that they are no longer willing to take up arms on their behalf, even rhetorically.

I find it extremely suspicious that he was standing outside the Capitol with a bullhorn on January 6 yelling at people to storm the building in a way that was clearly criminal incitement, but nothing happened to him. People who did much lesser things that day ended up in federal prison for 10 years, but he’s just fine. Even though he’s someone who should be on the left’s shit list. I think he’s a fed.

Increasingly it seems like recommending any kind of media to anyone is a fools errand. People just have very little tolerance to anything outside of their media comfort zone. Even short YouTube videos are usually a dud.

If they do try to dismiss it, I think they will go with the “this is just standard football hooliganism, which often has an ethnic tinge and involves physical assaults and rioting” excuse.

I think Biden is quietly pretty mad at Harris for shanking him, especially now that she whiffed the election. I doubt he would agree to that.

I think there’s some truth to it. Trying to outflank Republicans to the right on Israel seems like a puzzling strategy and it absolutely tanked Harris in Michigan. In Dearborn she came in third place behind Trump and Jill Stein. I think that also depressed turnout by liberal college students in a number of places. And most people who were seriously pro-Israel voted for Trump and Republicans anyway, because Republicans have a better established track record on supporting Israel.

Given the election results it’s clearly a lot less gendered than we thought. I suspect that there’s a pretty large contingent of female silent Trump voters that just keep their support to themselves to avoid social stigma.

I think January 6 may have genuinely spooked them into deciding that they couldn’t pull that type of thing again in the near future without provoking a civil war.

I think Hillary would be the better role model. Harris is just as venal but a lot stupider.

Her numbers in Illinois and Virginia are also really bad.

I like Trump but I don’t rule it out.

“Dissolving” and reconstituting programs in a shell game to avoid oversight is an intelligence agency staple.

The CIA literally has an occult warfare division (MK OFTEN) and maintained specialized units of remote viewers for years. Some of the intelligence they provided was actually acted upon by the military in various conflicts: they found an American general kidnapped by Red Army Faction during the Years of Lead in Italy. They gave information about new types of Soviet nuclear submarines to the Navy. They identified locations of Iraqi surface to air missile sites during the Gulf War. Given all that I could see why someone who had ties to the intelligence community like Tucker Carlson might not immediately write off the existence of demons.

I think part of the furor is because it’s an abstracted cartoon version of other more serious government outrages. It’s George Floyd and the Waco siege in miniature.

The White House chief of staff and his staff, high level people in the executive branch offices like the State Department and the CIA, heads of cabinet departments for domestic issues. Hundreds of anonymous bureaucrats.

Barack is not a commonly used first or last name for Israeli Jews. It’s primarily an Arab name. The former prime minister’s family name was the Lithuanian “Brog” and when the family Hebrewized that name it came out as Barak.

I admit I don’t know why we got “obama” instead of “barack”

Because Obama’s first presidential run started in 2007 and 2008 when there was still a lot of residual War on Terror fear and suspicion of Muslims. “Obama” sounds African, “Barack” sounds suspiciously Middle Eastern.

Will we be having an Election Day Mega-thread on November 5? Or do election post just go in the culture war thread?

I think a nuclear war between the United States/NATO and Russia is still the most likely existential crisis facing this planet. It doesn’t get nearly as much as attention as it should, here or elsewhere, because it’s now old fashioned and unstylish. And because younger people haven’t read about the likely scenarios for how it would happen, so the don’t realize the immense time pressure involved. The leadership on both sides would have about a ten minute window to make the decision whether to torch the planet. I find it worrying how cavalier everyone is about this, all the way from Reddit to the high political leadership.

What failure modes are most likely?

Deportation to the east

The end of a revolution is usually only visible in hindsight. This might be it but it’s too soon to say.

America is locked in a constant cycle of “regret war now get excited for the next war”. Vietnam was a tragic and pointless waste of life, but the Global War on Terror is an existential necessity, because Saddam has nukes and the Taliban hate us for our freedom. The Global War on Terror was born out of lies and hysteria, but the Ukraine War is an unambiguously righteous cause that justifies unlimited escalation.
